Why Low Vision Can be Exhausting

Why Low Vision Can Be So Exhausting (Even When You’re Not “Doing Much”)

If like me, you feel wiped out at the end of the day even though i t didn’t seem all that physically demanding, you’re definitely not alone.

A lot o f us with low vision go through something that’s really hard to explain to other people, and sometimes even hard to explain t o ourselves. It can feel like, “Why am I so tired when I didn’t really do that much?”

Here’s what helps it make more sense.
Seeing isn’t just your eyes working. It’s your brain doing a huge amount of behind the scenes processing every single second.
When vision is clear and effortless, most of that processing is automatic. You don’t even notice it happening.
But with low vision, your brain has t o work harder i n a few ways all at once:
-Filling in missing o r unclear details
-Interpreting blurry or low contrast information
-Constantly figuring out where things are in space
– Making quick adjustments just t o stay oriented and steady
It’s basically nonstop problem solving just to make sense of your surroundings in real time.

And that’s the key point. That kind of effort is real work. Even though you’re not physically active, your brain i s using a lot of energy in the background all day long.

So that tired feeling isn’t you being weak o r imagining things. It’s your system doing extra work just to help you navigate the world.

A lot of us can find it comforting just to understand this. Because once we understand what’s actually happening, it can feel a lot less confusing and a lot less isolating. It starts to make sense why we feel the way we do, and it helps remind us that we’re not alone in it.
